✨February 6th is the national day of the Sámi people- also known as «Samefolkets dag» or «Samenes nasjonaldag» in Norwegian, or «Sámi álbmotbeaivi» in the northern Sámi language.
This day represents something important: it represents identity, the courage to be ones true self, honoring ones heritage, culture, language, and for some even the old Sámi religion. It’s about connecting with ones nation, the indigenous people who were here in this part of the land before Norway even existed as a country.
It’s about the memories of all the awful things that has happened to my people before, and it’s about looking forwards to a brighter future.
This particular date is chosen as the national day because this day was the day of the first meeting held for all Sámi peoples from Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia in 1917. Representatives met in Trondheim to discuss matters concerning the indigenous people, and issues they faced that seemed to be common for them all. Many of these representatives were women, which is also very special.
I always feel so connected to the nature and the old ways on this day, even though I won’t be able to celebrate properly today. I had the opportunity to eat a very modern version of some traditional Sámi food though: reindeer in pita with salad, topped with dressing made with cranberries. So good! Lihkku sámi álbmotbeivviin!❤️💙💛💚✨
